Weapon Group Feats

Source: Unearthed Arcana / PF Fighter Weapon Specialization Groups (with some changes)

Instead of the three categories (simple, martial, and exotic), this system groups weapons by similar type. It establishes two small lists of feats called Weapon Group Feats. The first tier includes simple weapons, the second tier martial and exotic weapons. Each feat allows a character to use a small number of similar weapons without penalty. When using a weapon with which you are not proficient, you take a -4 penalty on attack rolls (as before).

Any regular combat feat that requires a character to choose a specific weapon to apply the feat’s benefit to (such as Improved Critical, Weapon Focus, or Weapon Specialization) can instead be applied to a weapon group. The character must still meet the prerequisites for the feat.

Starting Weapon Group Feats
Warriors get four, Rogues two and Druids one weapon group feat. In addition, Elves can choose proficiency with bows as part of their racial abilities. Lastly, all PCs know the following feat by default:

Weapon Group (Basic Weapons)
You understand how to use a few basic weapon: club, dart, dagger (melee and thrown), and quarterstaff.

When choosing your starting weapon group, be aware that access to weapons is limited in this setting.

SIMPLE WEAPON GROUP FEATS

Weapon Group (Bows)
You understand how to use bows: shortbow, longbow, composite shortbow, and composite longbow.

Weapon Group (Clubs and Maces)
You understand how to use maces and club: club, light mace, heavy mace, greatclub, maul, quarterstaff, sap, and warmace (two-handed use).

Weapon Group (Crossbows)
You understand how to use crossbows: heavy crossbow, light crossbow, repeating heavy crossbow, and repeating light crossbow.

Weapon Group (Light Blades)
You understand how to use light bladed weapons: dagger, punching dagger, rapier, and short sword.

Weapon Group (Slings)
You understand how to use slings.

Weapon Group (Spears and Lances)
You understand how to use spears and javelins: javelin, lance, longspear, shortspear, and trident.

MARTIAL WEAPON GROUP FEATS

Weapon Group (Axes)
Prerequisite: Weapon Group (Clubs and Maces).
You understand how to use axes and axe-like weapons: handaxe, battleaxe, greataxe, and dwarven waraxe (two-handed use).

Weapon Group (Flails and Chains)
Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1.
You understand how to use flails and chain weapons: light flail and heavy flail.

Weapon Group (Heavy Blades)
Prerequisite: Weapon Group (Light Blades)
You understand how to use large bladed weapons: longsword, greatsword, falchion, scimitar, and bastard sword (two-handed use).

Weapon Group (Picks and Hammers)
Prerequisite: Weapon Group (Spears and Lances)
You understand how to use picks and hammer: light pick, heavy pick, light hammer, warhammer, scythe, and maul (two handed use).

Weapon Group (Polearms)
Prerequisite: Weapon Group (Spears and Lances)
You understand how to use all polearms: glaive, guisarme, halberd, and ranseur.

Weapon Group (Exotic Double Weapons)
Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1.
Whenever you take a Weapon Group proficiency feat, you also gain proficiency in the exotic double weapons associated with that group. When you take this feat, you gain proficiency in the exotic double weapons associated with the weapon groups that you already know how to use.
Some exotic double weapons require you to be proficient with two weapon groups to gain proficiency in their use from this feat.

  • Axes: Orc double axe, dwarven urgrosh (must also have Weapon Group [spears and lances]).
  • Maces and Clubs: Double mace
  • Picks and Hammers: Double hammer, gnome hooked hammer.
  • Spears and Lances: Dwarven urgrosh (must also have Weapon Group [axes]).

Weapon Group (Exotic Weapons)
Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1.
When you take this feat, you gain proficiency in the exotic weapons associated with the weapon groups that you already know how to use. Whenever you take a Weapon Group proficiency feat, you also gain proficiency in the exotic weapons (but not the exotic double weapons) associated with that group.

  • Axes: Dwarven waraxe (one-handed use).
  • Clubs and Maces: Warmace (one-handed use)
  • Crossbows: Great crossbow, hand crossbow.
  • Flails and chains: Chain-and-dagger, scourge, spiked chain, whip
  • Heavy Blades: Bastard sword (one-handed use)
  • Picks and Hammers: gnome battlepick, maul (one handed use).
  • Polearms: Heavy poleaxe
  • Spears and Lances: greatspear
